It’s hard to write a book. It’s harder to write a book on a popular subject like democracy, which many think they understand. It’s hardest to write a book on a complex subject like American democracy, telling everybody that “everything you think you know about American democracy is wrong.” But that is exactly what this book is. Below is a book review by Dr. John Lounsbury. “In this book, Dr. Li writes about American democracy boldly and artfully with scientific logic, engineering accuracy, American straight-forwardness, and Chinese sophistication, in plain English with great clarity.” America is deeply in trouble, not only economically but also politically! Economically, three examples 1) Food Stamps Still Feed One in Seven Americans Despite Recovery. 2) America’s Unseen Social Crisis Men without Work. The labor force participation rate is at the 1978 low. 3) At $19 trillion and counting, our national debt will eventually crush us. Politically, after two of the arguably worst Presidents, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, Americans faced an even worse choice in 2016 Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. Most Americans liked neither, but had to settle on the lesser of two evils Trump! Will America’s gamble on Trump pay off? I certainly hope so (Chapters 118 & 119)! Should American democracy have come down to betting on one God-like figure? No! What, then, is the root cause for America’s trouble? “It’s the political system, stupid!” I believe I have the most accurate diagnosis for America and the best solution. To best appreciate them, you must better understand democracy, America, China, and the world in which America is a part. Let’s begin with Alexis de Tocqueville. In 1831, a 26-year-old Frenchman named Alexis de Tocqueville visited America. He traveled widely throughout the country, taking extensive notes about his observations and reflections. He returned to France in less than two years, and published a book entitled "Democracy in America". Today, it is considered an early work, and a must-read, on democracy, sociology, and political science. In his book, Tocqueville writes “The American people, through their chosen representatives who were instructed by their wisdom and experience and were supported by their virtues – cultivated, purified and ennobled by self-reliance and the love of God – had matured, in the excellent wisdom of their counsels, a new plan of government, which embraced every security for their liberties and equal rights and privileges to all in the pursuit of happiness.” What a generous assessment of America by a young Frenchman at that time! While Tocqueville was obviously impressed with America, especially its tremendous potential, he was oblivious to the plight of America’s many problems at that time, to the point that I doubt whether he truly understood America and democracy. 2 examples 1) “The American people” he referred to included some rich white males only 2) Slavery Overall, Tocqueville did a good job for his time. But time is the best judge for everything, including his book, America, and democracy. Unlike Tocqueville who came to America as a tourist, I escaped “communist China” in 1982 and came to America in 1985 to stay. Furthermore, unlike Tocqueville, who saw his country France lose her way during his lifetime, I have watched my native country China rise astronomically, while fully taking advantage of it by running an import-export business between China and America! Finally, unlike Tocqueville who spent less than two years in America as a tourist, it has taken me some 30 years to begin to gain some insight into the intricate relationships among communism, socialism, capitalism, democracy. I have much more experience than Tocqueville when writing about America. My diagnosis for America getting re-elected ad nauseam. Mu solution Term limits for Congress, with the American Presidency being strictly limited to 1 term (e.g. 6 years). For more, read on!

Very interesting and thought provoking ideas. Both liberals and conservatives will enjoy this book, and probably agree and disagree with Dr. Li on some points. Where ever our human civilization is going, Dr. Li has the courage to challenge our most basic assumptions. That is much needed.Product details

American Democracy Frank Li PhD 9781539390961 Books Reviews
Frank Li's book, American Democracy, is a good read. He provides abundant examples of government policies and practices from China and the United States to make his points and his writing is clear and concise. Three years ago I was fortunate to visit China - too bad I didn't read this book first. It is thought-provoking and encourages the reader to consider things, not just accept them.

Another step in realizing his "American Dream" Dr. Li authors his book American Democracy. Explained in detail are his timely, somewhat provocative, ideas of potential reforms needed for an ideal form of government. He offers a perspective which encourages rethinking our priorities concerning our political system. Theories are presented key for anyone wanting to assess how present and future understanding of global reciprocal action could be realized. Extensive knowledge and experience of travel and living in China and America provide ideas adding important exposure to worldwide interaction. It illuminates the mind, one of those books you should read.
This book is as they say "write-on". You can never stop speaking enough about truths and facts. Capitalism is the most important structure in any society. It is simple to understand. "A trade between two parties that creates a gain for one or both parties. Then you repeat it".
As this book states, full Democracy has been tried many times and it always fails. Once there are large masses of those who can vote and they do not contribute but do receive from society by ways of taking from those who do contribute you will establish a voting block that will only vote to reward themselves. Long term this never works. Bill T
American Democracy is an interesting and informative book that provides insight from a different perspective than what is commonly taught in the US educational system. Dr. Li looks at our government and political structure from a worldly (less brainwashed, even) viewpoint, that of someone born in China who has also lived in Europe and ultimately settled in the US over 30 years ago. While his Ph.D. is in engineering, the reader can tell that politics is his great love, and his concern for his adopted country is evident. His opinions and the humor with which he delivers them are refreshing. The book is written in a outline-type style, which took just a little getting used to, however, it ultimately made the book quicker to read and easier to follow. My only real complaint is the repeated use of Wikipedia as a source, being that the information there is not verified and can be unreliable. I did enjoy the links to various YouTube videos and articles, and this alone makes the ebook version worth so much more than the $3.99 price. Highly recommend!
It takes a little patience to get through this long book that has a lot of redundancy but it is well worth it. The author covers a lot of ground and displays a lot of knowledge of history and of course has the perspective of being the son of one of the most important Members of the Communist Party of China. Frank Li, living in China and later in Japan, Europe, and for over thirty years in the U.S. easily came to understand the evils of Communism and the benefits of the evolved version which the Author refers to as State Capitalism which he believes is better than what most in the U.S. call Democracy which Dr. Li describes as ultimately the Majority Suppressing the Minority. For Frank Li, Capitalism trumps government organization and government organization that inhibits Capitalism leads to equal poverty.
The author is quite witty and my favorite Harry Truman quote was “A bureaucrat is a Democrat who holds some office that a Republican wants”. That kind of sums up Frank Li’s views on our political system.
I read the Edition of the book which converts the book into a massive encyclopedia because of all the links. That is a good price for an encyclopedia. There are many reasons to buy this book. Learning more about China and Japan was of most interest to me. I am fairly well informed on the History of WWII and Frank Li added a lot to my knowledge in those areas. It is a long but good read for High School Students. I would not recommend it for Neocons unless it was part of a Twelve-Step Program for Recovery.
These are interesting times for Americans. Frank's version of disruptive thinking is unique because of his Chinese roots and global perspective, which is inspirational and fresh. If this China-born businessman can demonstrate love of country and such intelligent and thoughtful reflection, native Americans have an obligation to listen. American Democracy is very readable and logical in its structure and progression. He appears to be a political conservative and moderate social progressive. Many references to other points of knowledge through hot links (on the edition) provide a much larger body of knowledge and broader resources. It is a great book to pick up, digest a section, and return to continue later. It can be a quick read but to fully appreciate it is to digest over time and reflect. It is in some ways the book is like Civics 101 from a global perspective that recognizes China as the world power that it is becoming.
This is an insightful book that really made me question some of my fundamental beliefs about my country and what I'd been taught in school. I would highly recommend it to any critical thinkers that want to look at the US from a different perspective to understand what is broken and how it can be fixed. Check it out!
